Rejoice, 'Mummy' fans!The Mummyfranchise is officially returning, with key, fan-favourite actors confirmed for a long-awaited fourth instalment set for release in 2028.
Universal Pictures officially announcedThe Mummy 4on 10 February 2026, marking the formal revival of the series. The film is scheduled to open in cinemas on 19 May 2028. For OG fans, its release will come 96 years after the original Boris Karloff film, 29 years after 1999'sThe Mummy, and 20 years afterThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Plans for a fourth film date back to 2008, before the third entry reached cinemas. AfterThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperorreceived a poor box office response and negative audience reaction, the project was ultimately cancelled in 2012 in favour of a reboot. That reboot became 2017'sThe Mummystarring Tom Cruise, which launched Universal's Dark Universe but did not continue beyond its first instalment.
Rumours of a direct sequel resurfaced following Brendan Fraser's Academy Award win for Best Actor forThe Whalein 2022.
The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are best known for directing 2022'sScream, its sequelScream VI, as well asReady or NotandAbigail. The screenplay has been written by David Coggeshall, whose previous credits includeOrphan: First Killand the upcomingMatchboxfilm.
In terms of casting, fans of the 90s films will be pleased to hear that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O'Connell. Both starred inThe MummyandThe Mummy Returns, while Fraser also appeared inThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Weisz did not return for the third film, where Maria Bello portrayed Evelyn.
Oded Fehr, who played Ardeth Bay in the first two films, has expressed interest in returning. John Hannah, who portrayed Jonathan Carnahan throughout the original trilogy, has also indicated interest. Their involvement is yet to be confirmed.
It remains unclear how the character of Alex O'Connell will be handled. Freddie Boath portrayed the character inThe Mummy Returns, while Luke Ford played an adult version inThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. There has been no announcement about whether either actor will return, whether the role will be recast, or whether the character will appear at all.
There has also been no confirmation regarding the return of Arnold Vosloo, who played Imhotep in the first two films. The character did not appear inThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Plot details forThe Mummy 4are currently being kept under wraps, aside from the confirmed return of Rick and Evelyn.
