43 years after ending the dominance of the Clive Lloyd-led West Indies side to win the 1983 World Cup, the Indian cricket team broke another record of the legendary team after reaching the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Like that tournament, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side defeated England in the semifinal to reach the final of the ongoing event, where they will play New Zealand in the summit clash on Sunday (March 8) at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.
The Indian team has reached the final of the T20 World Cup for the fourth time in history and is the first team to achieve the rare feat. The Men in Blue have the chance to rewrite the history books and become the first team to defend the title, win the trophy at home, and become three-time champions.
This marks the fourth consecutive limited-overs men's ICC tournament final that India has reached after the 2023 World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup, and 2025 Champions Trophy. They are the first team to achieve the rare feat in the 56-year history of multi-nation events being hosted.
After reaching the final of each of the three World Cups, West Indies held the record for more than four decades. India was the only other team to reach three consecutive finals.

During the semi-final against England, India's total of 253 was the highest in a T20 World Cup knockout game. Before this game, no team had even scored 200 runs in the tournament's semifinal or final in any of the 10 editions so far. The Men in Blue also scored a total above the 250 mark for the sixth time in history. No other international team has managed to achieve the rare feat more than three times. In all forms of T20 cricket, they broke Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) record, who have hit as many runs in an innings five times.
