RIVERVIEW, Fla. — A Florida mother was arrested after the sheriff's office said she let her 11-year-old daughter drive her to a 7-Eleven. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a 7-Eleven in Riverview Sunday night after the child reportedly crashed the car into a concrete barrier. The child's mother, 41-year-old Carribean Myers, allegedly allowed the girl to drive from their home to the gas station while she supervised from the passenger seat. While the child was trying to stop, she mistook the gas pedal for the brake and hit the barrier, said the sheriff's office. No one was injured, but the crash did damage the car and the building. Deputies learned Myers hadn't had a valid driver's license since July 13 and that she had previously allowed her underage children to drive. "Putting an 11-year-old behind the wheel is reckless and could have ended in tragedy," Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a press release. "This mother made a dangerous decision that put her child and everyone around them at risk. Parents have a responsibility to protect their children, not place them in situations that could get them or someone else seriously hurt. We will hold anyone accountable who puts a child in danger." Myers is charged with child abuse and permitting an unauthorized minor to drive.
