Police and emergency crews flooded the Kearns area in Salt Lake County on Monday, August 17, after gunfire broke out near a church where a funeral was underway.
Local reporting now confirms one person was killed and two others were injured in the Kearns church shooting. Early scanner traffic and reports from the scene described a huge disturbance involving approximately 80 or more people fighting, shots fired, officers deploying OC spray, and additional police activity spreading through the surrounding area.
The scene centered near 5000 South and 4600 West in Kearns, with additional police activity reported around 4700 South and 4000 West. Unified Police officers had reportedly been requested to attend the funeral as a precaution before the violence erupted.
The developing situation also prompted Granite School District to temporarily place West Kearns Elementary, Gourley Elementary and Kearns Jr. High on secure protocol at the direction of law enforcement. Officials stressed that the shooting was not connected to the schools, and the security measures were later lifted.
