Nearly a day after the Iranian warship was torpedoed by an American warship in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lankan Opposition MP Mujeebur Rahman questioned the government in Parliament why the Iranian vessel IRIS Dena was forced to wait for hours offshore.
“The vessel waited for 11 hours about 40 nautical miles off Galle port for permission from the Sri Lankan government to berth, as it had difficulties returning to Iran due to the conflict situation," Rahman said in Parliament.
The Opposition MP’s remarks came hours after a United States submarine sank the Iranian frigate off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, killing 87 sailors. The attack on the frigate further escalated tensions between Tehran and Washington on Thursday as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck a US tanker in the Gulf in retaliation within 24 hours of its ship being attacked.
A US submarine torpedoed and sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, declaring it the first sinking of an enemy ship by torpedo since World War II.
The attack, carried out with a Mark 48 torpedo, was touted by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth as evidence of America’s global reach in the ongoing conflict with Iran.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Iranian warship died a “quiet death". “An American submarine sank an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters," Hegseth said.
The frigate, IRIS Dena, was reportedly heading back to Iran from India’s Visakhapatnam after participating in two naval exercises last month when it was hit by a US torpedo.
