The correspondence was not limited to professional matters; it also included discussions about women and messages detailing his sexual encounters. These notes occasionally featured images, which have been obscured in the DOJ documents. Furthermore, the pair traded emails concerning prostitution.
Sulayem comes from an influential Emirati family with close connections to the leadership inDubai. As the head of DP World, he directs one of the largest port firms on the planet. He amassed his wealth through state-supported projects, and his commercial interests now encompass maritime hubs, transport, property, hospitality, and international ventures.
The official DP World website identifies Sulayem as a prominent businessman and specialist in global trade. He is credited with spearheading the rapid growth of Dubai's local systems, particularly its maritime facilities and tax-free economic zones. A key highlight of his career is the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), an established commercial hub that currently hosts over 11,000 firms.
His other projects include founding Nakheel, a top-tier property and tourism developer responsible for several of Dubai's most famous landmarks. These include The Palm, the largest artificial group of islands on earth. He also spearheaded the creation of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), a hub dedicated to the trade of gold, gemstones, energy, and various other raw materials.
In 2008, Sulayem was awarded an honorary doctorate by Middlesex University Dubai, having previously earned a BSc in Economics from Temple University in the United States. Furthermore, he leads the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC) and the Dubai International Chamber. His extensive list of responsibilities also includes seats on the Dubai Executive Council, the UAE FederalTaxAuthority, the Dubai Free Zones Council, and Nakheel PJSC.
While his career has been defined by these massive industrial achievements, recent legal filings have turned the focus away from his business empire and towards his private associations.
