President Trump unveiled his Gaza deal with sweeping claims of a historic breakthrough - including the complete disarmament of Hamas and an Israeli military withdrawal.
But the plan is already facing major obstacles. Israel has rejected key elements of the proposal, while deadly Israeli strikes continue across Gaza and the IDF retains control over large parts of the territory.
Nearly a year after the ceasefire, around 70 per cent of Gaza’s surviving population reportedly cannot return home - either because their homes are inaccessible or no longer exist. With Israel restricting the entry of heavy machinery needed to clear the rubble, the full death toll remains unknown. At the same time, Trump’s vision for Gaza’s redevelopment looks increasingly difficult to achieve.
The political consequences are spreading beyond the Middle East. With the 2026 US midterms approaching, a new generation of Democratic politicians has made Gaza and US policy toward Israel a major issue with liberal voters. Polling suggests public opinion on Israel is shifting across party lines, while the Iran War has further damaged Trump’s approval ratings.
