New video shows bystanders jumping into action to stop a suspect from trying to rob an elderly man at a Tucson fast food spot. On July 9, Tucson officers received reports about an attempted robbery at a fast food restaurant near Oracle and Prince roads. Investigators say a 34-year-old man followed a 70-year-old into the restaurant, attempting to steal his backpack. Surveillance video from the restaurant shows the suspect walking next to the elderly man and attempting to grab a backpack on his walker. The suspect tries to snatch the bag from the man’s arms, knocking him to the ground during the scuffle. Two men then ran toward the suspect, causing him to drop the backpack. The men briefly yelled at each other and attempted to throw punches before the suspect fled the scene. Video shows the two men helping the victim pick up his belongings off the floor. Investigators say witnesses gave a description of the suspect and within minutes, officers found him and took him into custody. He was booked into jail on a charge of attempted robbery. His name was not publicly released. The victim had minor injuries and was treated at the scene by emergency crews. Tucson police thanked the bystanders for their quick-thinking and actions. “This incident highlights how community members and officers work together to help keep Tucson safe. Thank you to the witnesses who provided information that helped officers quickly locate the suspect,” the department said in a statement.
