Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar‘s son,Nishant Kumar, has recently begun circulating widely in the state’s political corridors. Known for maintaining a low profile and staying away from public life, Nishant has rarely been seen participating in political activities. However, speculation is now growing that he may soon formally enter politics by joining theJanata Dal (United) (JDU).

Political chatter has also suggested that if Nitish Kumar eventually moves to the Rajya Sabha, Nishant could even emerge as a contender for the post ofBihar’s Deputy Chief Minister.

Nishant Kumar was born on July 20, 1975, to Nitish Kumar and his wife Manju Sinha. Manju Sinha, a school teacher by profession, passed away in 2007. After her death, Nishant largely withdrew from public attention and has since lived a quiet and private life. He began his schooling at St Karen’s School in Patna and later studied at Manav Bharati India International School in Mussoorie. Nishant also attended Kendriya Vidyalaya in Patna during his early education. For higher studies, he enrolled at the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra near Ranchi, where he pursued a degree in software engineering.

During his time at BIT Mesra, Nishant shared classrooms with several individuals who later became associated with political families. Among them were Ruhail Ranjan, son of former Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan; Arjit Shashwat, son of senior BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Choubey; Rajesh Chaudhary, brother of Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary; and Amit Chaurasia, son of Ganga Prasad.

Interestingly, according to Nishant’s friend Ruhail Ranjan, most classmates were unaware for nearly two years that Nishant was the son of Nitish Kumar.

Now around 50 years old, Nishant Kumar remains unmarried and is known for leading a simple and disciplined lifestyle. Those familiar with him describe him as spiritually inclined and deeply private. According to media reports, Nishant spends much of his time reading books on socialism, contemporary Bihar, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), as well as spiritual texts such as the Bhagavad Gita. He is also said to read the works of spiritual leader Osho.

Yoga, meditation, and prayer form a daily part of his routine. Nishant reportedly prefers simple food, avoids public gatherings and political rallies, and spends most of his time either with close family members or in solitude. Despite his reserved nature, he is believed to share a close bond with his father and is often seen greeting him warmly on special occasions.

For years, Nishant has remained away from active politics. However, during the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections last year and at Nitish Kumar’s swearing-in ceremony, he was seen participating more visibly than before. On his birthday, Nishant had publicly expressed confidence that his father would return as Chief Minister and that the NDA alliance would secure a majority. Though he avoided answering further questions about his own political ambitions, leaders and workers within the JDU have long urged him to join the party.

Recent reports suggest that preparations may be underway within the party to formally welcome him, though no official announcement has been made yet.

Nishant Kumar is also believed to possess considerable assets. According to various media reports, his total movable and immovable property is estimated to be around Rs 3.61 crore. This includes approximately Rs 1.63 crore in bank balances, cash, and investments, along with more than Rs 1.28 crore held in bank accounts and fixed deposits. His immovable assets are reportedly valued at about Rs 1.98 crore and include ancestral farmland and residential properties.
