Canadian authorities responded to a shooting incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northeastern British Columbia, where police have confirmed multiple victims. The incident unfolded shortly after midday on Tuesday, triggering alarge-scale emergency responseand lockdowns across multiple communities.
According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police, officers were dispatched to the school around 1:20 p.m. local time following reports of an active shooter. Staff Sergeant Kris Clark, speaking to The Globe and Mail, said police have confirmed that several individuals were injured but could not yet provide details on the number of victims or the severity of their injuries.
Authorities said the original suspect has been located deceased. However, investigators are continuing to verify reports suggesting that a second individual may have been involved in the shooting. “Work continues to determine whether a second suspect was involved and the total number of victims,” RCMP said in an official update.
Following the incident, RCMP issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in and around Tumbler Ridge, instructing people to stay indoors, lock their doors, and avoid all non-essential movement. The warning also extended to nearby areas including Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, as a precaution while police secured the area.
“Do not approach. Call 9-1-1,” RCMP warned, urging the public to avoid the school and comply fully with police instructions. Additional officers from neighbouring detachments have been deployed, along with the North District Emergency Response Team, to support the ongoing operation.
School District 59 confirmed that a “hold and secure” lockdown was implemented at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and the nearby elementary school. Officials said students were being kept inside as a precaution and asked parents not to rush to the schools while the situation remains active.
The district said it is working closely with RCMP and emergency services and will provide further guidance once it is safe to do so. No timeline has been given for lifting the lockdowns.
Tumbler Ridge is a small community of roughly 2,400 people, located approximately 660 kilometres northeast of Vancouver. Incidents of this nature are rare in the region, and the shooting has left residents shaken as authorities continue to assess the threat.
Police have stressed that information remains preliminary and subject to change. Officials said further updates will be released once investigators confirm whether additional suspects are involved and once more is known about the condition of the victims.
