Brian McGinnis, a Marine veteran and Green Party Senate candidate from North Carolina, made national headlines on Capitol Hill Wednesday when his left arm reportedly snapped during a protest at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

Footage shows McGinnis shouting about the US military's role in Iran and refusing to leave, leading to a dramatic confrontation involving three Capitol police officers and Senator Tim Sheehy, a Republican from Montana.

McGinnis, dressed in what appeared to be his Marine Corps dress uniform, stood upduring the Senate hearing and began vocally questioning why American forces were being sent into conflict zones. Shouting, 'America does not want to send its sons and daughters to war for Israel!' and 'No one wants to fight for Israel!', he demanded answers from senators about US involvement in recent military operations in Iran.

Over the weekend, US and Israeli forces reportedly launched strikes in Iran, killing Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and targeting military assets. McGinnis had previously posted videos criticising the strikes, warning that the US is 'becoming a zionist country that believes Israel has the right to proliferate its boundaries into the rest of the countries surrounding it.' His protest was part of his broader campaign message as a Green Party candidate focused on foreign policy and the impact of war on American service members.

As McGinnis refused to leave the hearing room, three Capitol Police officers moved to usher him out. Senator Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL and member of the subcommittee, stepped in to assist, lifting McGinnis' leg while the protestor clutched a door frame with his left hand.

Onlookers captured video showing the hand stuck between the door and its frame, with people shouting, 'His hand! His hand! Oh, my God!' Despite the intensity of the struggle, Sheehy and the officers sought to calm McGinnis while attempting to escort him out. Witnesses reported that McGinnis' left arm appeared broken during the altercation. Sheehy later described the protestor as 'unhinged' and said he came 'looking for a confrontation.' Capitol police said the protestor and three officers required treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.

After the skirmish, McGinnis was arrested and transported to George Washington University Hospital. Capitol Police confirmed he faces three counts of assaulting a police officer, three counts of resisting arrest, and one count of crowding, obstructing, and incommoding.

Mark Elbourno, a Green Party official managing McGinnis' campaign, insisted that McGinnis did not assault anyone and was only speaking out against the war. He stated, 'He just wanted to be heard, speaking loud and clear. He was assaulted, actually. They broke his arm.' McGinnis' protest and subsequent arrest have raised questions about how authorities handle disruptions during congressional hearings, especially when the protestor is a decorated veteran and political candidate.

The incident quickly ignited online discussions and media coverage. Some accused Senator Sheehy of causing McGinnis' injury, while others defended his actions as necessary to maintain order during the hearing.

Sheehy posted on social media, emphasising that he was trying to de-escalate the situation and said, 'I hope he gets the help he needs without causing further violence.' McGinnis' protest has drawn attention to broader debates over U.S. military action in Iran and the ethical responsibilities of government officials to the troops.
