Colombo:A second Iranian warship was reportedly heading towards Sri Lankan waters on Thursday, March 5, said Sri Lankan minister Nalinda Jayatissa. The development came almost a day after the US Navy sank IRIS Dena, an Iranian frigate, killing 87 sailors.
Jayatissa said that the Iranian Naval Ship (IRINS) Bushehr is within Sri Lanka’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The Sri Lankan minister confirmed the development while responding to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa about whether the country's government was aware of the development.
Jayatissa stated that the government is making interventions to resolve the issue. "The government is aware of the matter. We are making necessary interventions to resolve this issue, minimise loss of lives and to ensure regional security. This vessel is not in our territorial waters. It is within the Exclusive Economic Zone," Jayatissa said, as quoted by Daily Mirror.

"Yet, we are making maximum intervention regarding the lives. We will submit a complete report in Parliament," he added.
US Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship:
The United States on Wednesday night claimed responsibility for the sinking of an Iranian frigate, IRIS Dena, in the Indian Ocean, with the Defence Secretary stating that a US submarine carried out the strike using a torpedo. According to the Pentagon, the submarine engaged the Iranian vessel after it was identified as a potential threat amid escalating regional tensions. Officials said the torpedo strike was precise and resulted in the rapid incapacitation of the warship.
The incident led to a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. After the US Navy sank the Iranian warship, Tehran launched a new wave of attacks on Thursday morning at Israeli and American bases.
The United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on Saturday, killing several of its top leaders. Iran then launched retaliatory strikes on Israel and US allies in the Middle East.
