The sinking of the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena by a US submarine in international waters in the Indian Ocean has been criticised sharply by experts, warning that the incident reflects a growing pattern of disregard for international maritime norms and could have serious implications for India.
"So, arguments about where Iranian Frigate IRIS Dena was torpedoed is not going to save our own ship. It is not about nitty grities of international law. The United States of today does not believe in any international law or norms," National security analyst Divya Kumar Soti wrote on X.
He also warned of potential strategic consequences for India.
"It is all about US hegemony. Tomorrow, it may start demanding Lakshadweep. What will be your argument then? Do not open doors for strategic enslavement and encirclement of India," Soti warned.

The comments came after reports that the Iranian warship was sunk in international waters by a US submarine, leaving more than 180 sailors to drown. So far, 87 bodies have been recovered and 32 people have been rescued by Sri Lankan Navy, news agency AP reported. The incident is believed to be the first time since World War II that an American submarine has sunk an enemy warship with a torpedo.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the action following the incident.
"The Iranian ship thought it was safe in international waters," he said. He added that the vessel was sent to the bottom and declared, "America is WINNING—decisively, devastatingly, and WITHOUT MERCY."
The remark, particularly the phrase “without mercy,” has drawn criticism from legal experts and strategic commentators.
Experts say the sinking raises serious concerns under international maritime law, particularly regarding the treatment of sailors stranded at sea.
