A band of moderate to heavy snow continued across Suffolk County late Wednesday morning, reducing visibility to a half-mile or less at times, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.

The weather service issued a special weather statement at 9:28 a.m. Wednesday for northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast Suffolk, as well as parts of southeastern Connecticut. The statement remains in effect until 11 a.m.

Forecasters said additional accumulations of up to 1 inch are possible before the snow tapers off from west to east by about 11 a.m. In its forecast discussion, the weather service said snowfall rates around 1 inch per hour were observed in the heaviest band this morning, with impacts continuing for the morning commute.

Temperatures were in the mid-30s across Long Island, but the weather service said the heavier snowfall rates were able to overcome the relatively mild surface temperatures.

Drivers encountering heavier snow are urged to slow down, use headlights and leave extra room between vehicles, the weather service said.

After the snow ends, conditions are expected to largely dry out this afternoon, with some clearing. High temperatures are expected to reach the upper 30s, which could help melt some of the new snow.

Looking ahead, the weather service said another round of light snow is possible late Thursday into Thursday night, though the chance of direct impacts has been trending lower. For Riverhead and the surrounding area, the forecast calls for a 30% chance of snow Thursday afternoon and Thursday night, with less than a half-inch of additional accumulation possible Thursday night.
