A brief burst of snow moving across eastern Long Island Wednesday morning could come down heavy at times, reducing visibility to a quarter-mile or less, according to the National Weather Service in Upton.
The weather service issued a special weather statement at 7:47 a.m. that covers Suffolk County and is in effect through 9:30 a.m.
Forecasters said accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with locally up to 3 inches possible. In its forecast discussion, the weather service said a band of snow associated with a warm front is moving east across Long Island, with a “quick inch” likely and hazardous travel possible during the morning commute.
Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing in most areas later this morning, and precipitation could taper to light rain, especially along the coast, the weather service said.
Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights and leave extra room between vehicles when encountering heavier snow.
