August 4th, 2026 - Manhattan, NY: At approximately 2:30 a.m., firefighters responded to the Astor Pl Station for a vacuum work train that caught fire in the tunnel. One person who was on the platform described hearing an explosion, a "boom" and then noticed the station starting to fill up with smoke leading to his exit from the station. As of 5 a.m., subway service was still suspended on the Lexington Ave line (4, 5, 6 lines) as firefighters continued to operate on the tracks hitting hot spots on the train in the station.
Multiple MTA members and also firefighters were reported injured from mostly smoke inhalation.
