A mass shooting at the newly opened In-N-Out Burger on Blue Lakes Boulevard North in Twin Falls, Idaho left three victims dead and seven people injured on August 1, 2026. The gunman, 24-year-old Chad Williams, later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing the total death toll to four.
Police confirmed that an armed civilian named Jordan Salinas and an off-duty law enforcement officer identified by family as Austin “AJ” Scott James returned fire during the attack. Their actions are credited with driving the shooter away from the crowded restaurant and parking lot, preventing further casualties. Austin Scott James was himself shot while confronting the gunman and is currently recovering from serious injuries.
In the chaotic hours after the shooting, two separate people were wrongly accused online. One was an active-duty military member named Amer Mandzic, who police publicly cleared of any involvement. The other was a living Navy sailor who shares the exact same name as the shooter, Chad Williams. That Navy sailor released a video stating he is not the gunman and asked the public to stop circulating his photos.
The shooting happened just one week after the Twin Falls In-N-Out location opened. Witnesses described the gunman emerging from the drive-thru with an AR-style rifle and opening fire. Employees were seen dragging a wounded coworker to safety. Roads including the Perrine Bridge were shut down as multiple agencies responded.
Officials say the investigation remains active with the FBI assisting. No motive has been released. Crisis counseling was offered to the community at Rock Creek Elementary School.
