A late-night drive along the Silchar bypass turned into a nightmare for a 28-year-old woman who has alleged that she was gangraped by a group of youths in front of her fiancé. Police said Tuesday that one accused has been arrested in connection with the case. According to the survivor's statement, the incident took place on the night of February 19. She and her fiancé were travelling by car along the Ramnagar bypass road in Silchar when they stopped near the Chengkoorie Road area after her fiancé briefly stepped out.
What followed, she alleged, was sudden and violent. A group of youths arrived in another vehicle, blocked their car and allegedly dragged her fiancé a short distance away, restraining him. The woman stated that she was then assaulted by the group one after another while her fiancé was held back.
Based on her complaint, Silchar Sadar police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, assault on a woman and dacoity.
Cachar Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das confirmed that one person has been taken into custody and that efforts are underway to track down the remaining suspects.
The survivor's medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited.
Police added that the woman also alleged the group extorted Rs 10,000 from the couple. Investigators are examining the extortion claim alongside the primary charges as the probe continues.
