Spending hours staring into glowing phones, tablets, and laptops is leading to a digital health issue - Digital Eye Strain - also known as computer vision syndrome.
Experts warn that it’s not just the total screen time that matters — it’s the uninterrupted, late-night exposure, especially in dark environments, that strains the eyes the most. Reduced blinking, prolonged focus at close distances, and blue light exposure can all impact both eye health and sleep quality.
Most people today spend an average of 8 to 10 hours daily on phones, laptops, or tablets. It's not just the number of hours you spend looking at a device that contributes to DES, but also the continuous and uninterrupted nature of your use, especially during nighttime in a dark environment.
When you are looking at a digital screen, your blink rate will typically decrease from normal. According to Dr. Yogesh Chougule, Consultant Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Surgeon, National Institute of Ophthalmology, Pune, when your blink rate decreases, the tears that provide lubrication for your eyes also evaporate rapidly. “Dry eyes and irritation are the primary causes of spending a tremendous amount of time at digital screens. This is further aggravated by using electronic devices in air-conditioned rooms or by wearing contact lenses,” he said.
“After prolonged periods, many people will develop chronic eye fatigue from staring at electronic devices for long hours, and this will affect their eye comfort and hence their productivity,” Dr. Chougule added.
