Delhi:A Delhi teen accused of driving a rented Mahindra Thar that killed a 65-year-old tourist in North Goa has been arrested and later granted bail, police said on Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Shaurya Goel. Eyewitnesses alleged that Goel attempted to jump behind the wheel soon after the crash to protect a woman who was allegedly driving the Thar at the time of theaccident. Police have not confirmed who was behind the wheel. The incident took place on Monday at the Happy Bar junction in Assagao, where the Thar rammed into the rear of a Hyundai i20 carrying a family of tourists from Bhopal. The impact was so severe that one side of the hatchback was completely crushed.

Police have registered an FIR under Sections 106(1), causing death by negligence, 281, rash driving, and 125, act endangering life, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The victim, 65-year-old Bhagatram Sharma, was travelling in the hatchback with his family when the collision occurred. He sustained serious injuries and was declared dead on the spot. Two other family members in the car suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital. Their condition is stated to be stable.

A five-month-old infant, who was also inside the hatchback, escaped without injuries. As a precaution, the baby has been kept under medical observation.

Police said the Mahindra Thar involved in the crash was a rented vehicle. Eyewitnesses at the scene alleged that the occupants of the SUV attempted to change seats immediately after the collision, raising suspicion over who was driving at the time of the crash.

Several videos from the spot surfaced on social media after the incident. One clip shows a male occupant of the Thar speaking on the phone, saying, “Papa, I was at the intersection...”, before his voice fades. The footage also shows three women seated in the rear of the damaged SUV.

Locals at the scene alleged that the Thar’s occupants were trying to shield the driver — allegedly a woman — from being held responsible, leading to a tense situation at the junction.

Visuals also show that one side of the Hyundai i20 was completely crushed due to the impact of the crash.

The case was registered against the driver of a Mahindra Thar (GA-03-V-5695) for alleged rash and negligent driving in North Goa.

According to the FIR, the accused was travelling from Mapusa towards Anjuna when the incident occurred.
