Georgia Congressman David Scott was seen seemingly sleeping during President Donald Trump's State Of The Union Speech on February 24. Scott, a Democrat, was captured on camera with his eyes briefly closed before waking up. The clip of the incident has gone viral on social media.

It also sparked a wave of reactions. Republican-aligned account RNCResearch wrote, "Democrat Rep. David Scott is literally sleeping at the State of the Union. Democrats are unserious people."

Scott represents Georgia's 13th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. He has held the seat since 2003.

Dozens of Democratic lawmakers chose to boycott President Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address, opting out in protest of his policies and rhetoric. While senior leaders such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer attended, they gave members the option of “silent defiance” inside the chamber or participating in alternative programming outside the event.

At least 45 Democrats were reported to have skipped the speech. The highest-ranking House Democrat to boycott was Minority Whip Katherine Clark, who cited what she described as Trump’s “series of lies” and “disrespect for the American people.”

Prominent progressive lawmakers who did not attend included Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Pramila Jayapal, Greg Casar and Delia Ramirez. Several Senate Democrats also boycotted, including Sens. Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, Chris Van Hollen, Ed Markey and Tina Smith.

Other notable House members who skipped the address included Reps. Ami Bera, Dina Titus, Sydney Kamlager-Dove and Don Beyer, underscoring broader Democratic dissent during the annual presidential address.
