Democratic Congressman Al Green was escorted out in the early stages of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday. The Texas lawmaker stood in the center aisle of the House chamber holding a sign that read, “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES!” as Trump entered ahead of his speech. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise was seen swiping at the sign as he walked in with the president, appearing to try to take it from Green.

The sign is an apparent reference to a racist depiction of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama that Trump posted on his Truth Social account earlier this month.

Green, who has repeatedly sought to impeach Trump, remained standing at the start of the address while most lawmakers were seated. He was then escorted out of the chamber by House personnel. GOP lawmakers and Trump allies chanted “USA, USA” as he was removed.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, marking the second consecutive presidential address to Congress in which Green has been removed. Last year, he was escorted out after interrupting Trump and waving his cane during the speech.
