An F-16 jet has been involved in a horror plane crash in Balıkesir, Turkey, according to reports.

Ambulances and police vehicles are at the scene of the reported crash near Bursa-Izmir highway.

Footage shows people rushing to the scene of the incident with debris scattered on the floor.

The city's Governer, İsmail Ustaoğlu, said: "One of our F-16 aircraft belonging to the squadron of the Balıkesir 9th Main Jet Base Command crashed during a mission flight around 00:50, and one of our pilots has been martyred. I pray to Allah for mercy upon our martyr and offer my condolences to his family. May our esteemed nation’s head be consoled."

The Istanbul-Izmir Motorway has a total length of 426 kilometers, including 384 kilometers of motorway and 42 kilometers of connecting roads.

The entire motorway was opened to traffic on August 4, 2019, after its completed sections were gradually put into service.
