The government on Tuesday blocked fiveOTT platformsfor streaming obscene content, officials said. The streaming platforms that have been blocked include: MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel, and Jugnu. Government said that the action was taken following a due procedure adding it directed internet service providers to block access to OTT platforms under the Information Technology Rules 2021 and the laws against obscenity.

These rules aim to maintain public decency, safeguard national interests, and enforce ethical journalistic practices across digital platforms.

The action aligns with Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which grants the government authority to block online content for various reasons.

Section 69A of the IT Act gives power to the government to issue directions for blocking for public access of any information through any computer resource.

According to the act, the government can issue blocking directions in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, Defense and security of the state, friendly relations with foreign states, public order, preventing incitement to any cognizable office.

As per the act, intermediaries failing to comply can face up to seven years of jail and a fine. The same section was used by the government to ban TikTok and other Chinese Apps in 2020.
