India are all set to take on Zimbabwe in their next match of the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on February 25. This is a must-win game for India afterthey were thrashed in the first Super 8 game of the tournament against South Africaby 76 runs. In fact,West Indies'105-run win over Zimbabwe has also put further pressure on the Men in Blue, who have a Net run rate of -3.8. Hence, they would need to win both their remaining games with big margins to ensure maximum chances of qualifying for the semi-final. Ahead of the Zimbabwe game, India have recieved some good news regardinf the pitch in Chennai.
According to a report by The Times of India, the India vs Zimbabwe match is set to be played on a fresh pitch in Chennai. While the Chepauk track has been known to be sluggish and assisting spinners and slow medium pacers, this track will assist the batters, as the ball would come on to the bat nicely.
This comes as good news for India, whose struggles against spin and seam off deliveries have been evident in the tournament, especially against South Africa. They will look to score more runs on a batting-friendly Chepauk track.
The report states that one of the pitches in Chennai was dug up and re-laid before the T20 World Cup. In fact, no cricket was played in that surface for five months before the tournament began to keep it fresh.
In the day games played in Chennai so far, New Zealand have chased down 182 and 176 against Afghanistan and UAE respectively in 17.5 and 15.1 overs respectively. In the two night games, teams have defended scores of 190 and 200 respectively. Hence, this proves that runs can be scored aplenty in Chennai.
