What was supposed to be an official Madison Police Department press conference quickly became one of the most chaotic public briefings imaginable. Protesters repeatedly interrupted Police Chief Shon Barnes seized control of the microphone, confronted people inside the room, accused officers of murder, and demanded answers about the fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz.
Police say officers encountered Ruiz while investigating reports involving stolen bicycles and someone checking vehicle doors in Madison. According to authorities, Ruiz fled from officers before a physical struggle unfolded near South Baldwin Street and Williamson Street.
Officials say Ruiz produced a fixed-blade knife during the struggle and injured an officer. Police also stated that a Taser was deployed but failed to stop the confrontation. The injured officer then fired multiple rounds, fatally striking Ruiz.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
