The T20 World Cup 2026 has already entered its Super 8 stage, as the top eight teams in the compeitition are vying for the coveted trophy by winning the final to be held on March 8 (Sunday). However, before the final, the top two teams from each of the two Super 8 groups would qualify for the semi-final. While one of the semi-finals is confirmed to be held in the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the other semi-final venue is a choice between Eden Gardens (Kolkata) and the R Premadasa Stadium (Colombo). Now, Kolkata's chances of hosting the semi-final have decreased further.
According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, one of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026 will be held in Colombo even if Sri Lanka qualifies for the final four and plays anyone other than India. Earlier, the match was only to be held in Colombo, if Pakistan qualify for that stage of the tournament.
However, if there is an India vs Sri Lanka semi-final, then the match will be held in Mumbai on March 5 (Thursday).
"Semi-final 1 is a floating arrangement with the match to be held in either Colombo or Kolkata If Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals, they will play in semi-final 1 in Colombo on 4 March. If Pakistan do not qualify for the semi-finals, but Sri Lanka do qualify and play anyone other than India, then Sri Lanka will play in semi-final 1 in Colombo," an ICC source told the publication.
A semi-final in Kolkata would be guaranteed if either Pakistan or Sri Lanka do not qualify for the final four of the tournament. Both nations are placed in Group 2 of the Super 8.
In case that happens, then the team who will finish on top of Group 1 will take place the second-placed team on Group 2 (either New Zealand or England) in the semi-final.
