Unrest has erupted across multiple states in Mexico after Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed.
Following his death during a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, gunmen believed to be his loyalists initiated coordinated attacks. Highways were blocked with burning vehicles, buildings were set ablaze, and flights were canceled.
Several videos are going viral on social media, in which the cartels can be seen chasing down civilian vehicles on the highway and opening fire. It is reported that the people being attacked are not rival gang members, but just regular people.
Videos shared by security sources showed roadblocks on major highways, armed men stopping vehicles and military presence in residential areas.

In some cities, authorities have asked residents and tourists to stay indoors as a safety measure. Gunmen attacked a National Guard base and public transport was suspended.
A CJNG member told Reuters the violence was revenge for Oseguera’s death. “The attacks were carried out in revenge for the leader’s death, at first against the government and out of discontent. But, later, the internal killings are coming, by the groups moving in to take over," a person said.
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the powerful head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), also known as “El Mencho", was killed during a Mexican military operation in Jalisco state on Sunday.
