Here's what to know in Rhode Island:
Heavy snowfall is blocking exhaust vents for furnaces and trapping dangerous concentrations of carbon monoxide in some homes, Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva said on Monday Feb. 23.
By the late afternoon, the Fire Department had taken 11 calls for emergencies related to gas or carbon monoxide, Silva said, adding that snow-blocked exhaust outlets were a frequent culprit.
The vents aren't always easy to see on the side of a house. Vents with proximity to snow-piles, perhaps from driveway clearing operations, are vulnerable to blockage, Silva said.
He urges residents to ensure that furnace vents are clear and to monitor conditions in their homes with carbon monoxide detectors.
