The gold medal-winning US women's hockey team declined an invitation to attend President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, igniting debate in Washington over whether the decision was a quiet act of protest or simply a scheduling matter. What should have been a celebratory moment quickly spiralled into controversy, with critics pointing to remarks Trump had made about the team's invitation even before the team's decision was made public.

The decision has intensified scrutiny of Trump's relationship with champion athletes and fuelled debate over whether the rejection constituted a deliberate political gesture. Either way, the optics were damaging.

The women's hockey team declined the State of the Union invitation extended to them following their gold medal victory. The move triggered immediate reactions online, with some interpreting the decision as a pointed political statement.

A spokesperson for USA Hockey struck a diplomatic tone. In a statement, they said: 'We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning US Women's Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement.'

The spokesperson added, 'They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment.'

Despite the carefully worded response, the fact remains that the women's hockey team snubbed the high-profile event, leaving Trump facing awkward headlines.

The controversy deepened after resurfaced remarks from Trump himself. Following the Olympic victory, he had participated in a congratulatory call with the men's hockey team, who also secured gold.

During that call, Trump appeared to express reluctance about extending similar recognition to the women's side. He said: 'And we have to — I must tell you — we're going to have to bring the women's team.'

He continued, '[If I don't] do that, I do believe I probably would be impeached, OK?'
