Lord Peter Mandelson has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, the Metropolitan Police confirmed on Monday. Video footage showed the former Labour minister and former UK ambassador to the United States being escorted from his London home by officers before being driven away in an unmarked car. The arrest took place at an address in Camden on February 23, according to police. This is the second arrest in the UK amidst the fallout from the Epstein Files after Ex-Prince Andrew was taken into custody last week.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, February 23 and has been taken to a London police station for interview. This follows search warrants at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas.”
The development comes amid allegations that Mandelson passed information to convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein during his time serving as business secretary. Police confirmed that two of his properties were searched as part of the investigation.
Footage circulating online captured the moment officers escorted Mandelson from his residence before placing him into a waiting vehicle. The video shows him being driven away shortly after leaving the property.
Earlier on Monday afternoon, the government said documents relating to Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador would be published in early March.
Authorities have not provided further details regarding the specific nature of the misconduct allegation. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Mandelson has been taken to a London police station for questioning.
The arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing scrutiny surrounding figures linked to Epstein. Police activity included the execution of search warrants at addresses in both Wiltshire and Camden prior to the arrest.
No further official statement has been released regarding potential charges.
