India's chances of reaching the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final suffered a major blow as West Indies continued their unbeaten run in the tournament, as they started their campaign in the Super 8 stage with a statement performance at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai by a mammoth margin of runs.
The two-time champions posted a score of 254 on the board with Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell scoring half-centuries. In reply, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 147 and lost by 107 runs, the biggest-ever defeat margin in the tournament by a Test playing nation.
The result means that the Shai Hope-led side got a major boost on their Net Run Rate (NRR) of +5.350. This comes after South Africa thrashed the hosts by 76 runs in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 22), which ensured that India's NRR fell - 3.800.

In this scenario, even if India wins both their games, three teams will end up level on points unless Zimbabwe beats South Africa. In such a situation, the defending champions will need a miraculous effort to ensure that their NRR goes above the Proteas and Windies.
However, if South Africa beats West Indies, India will qualify with wins over Zimbabwe and West Indies, and the NRR will not matter.
