Shimron Hetmyer created history as West Indies continued their thumping run of form in the 2026 T20 World Cup during their first Super Eight fixture of the tournament on Monday (February 23) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The West Indies star made a knock of 85 runs in 34 balls, which included seven boundaries and as many sixes and came at an incredible strike-rate (SR) of 250.00.
Hetmyer continued his fine form in the tournament, which has now seen him make 219 runs at an average of 54.75 with a scoring rate of 185.49. This is his second half-century of the tournament after a knock of 64 against Scotland in the opening game of the tournament. The 29-year-old is the second-highest run-getter of the tournament behind only Pakistan's Sahibazada Farhan.
Hetmyer's knock is the fastest innings of more than 70 runs in a T20 World Cup innings. In fact, he is the first player to finish his innings with a strike-rate of 250 while scoring as many runs. The previous best scoring rate from a player of a full-member country belonged to former Indian star Yuvraj Singh.Among players to score over 80 runs in an innings, the record belonged to 2024 T20 World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma.

Among players with a better SR than Hetymer, the highest individual score was the Netherlands' Stephan Myburgh when he made 63 runs in just 23 balls while batting at a rate of 273.91. Ishan Kishan struck at 256.16 while making 61 runs off 24 balls. Michael Hussey also had a scoring rate of exactly 250 when he made a 24-ball 60 against Pakistan in the 2010 edition's semi-final.
Hetmyer is the first player to score a 50 against Zimbabwe with a SR of 250.The previous best scoring rate by a player against the African side was by Namibia's JN Frylinck (77 runs at 248.38) in 2025. Among players from Test-playing nations as well as the T20 WorldCup, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav (61 at 244) held the record, which was set in 2022 at MCG.
