A recreational pontoon boat carrying 19 people caught fire and exploded near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday afternoon. According to officials on scene, one person has died, two others remain missing, and at least 16 people were rescued.
The U.S. Coast Guard and San Francisco Fire Department responded to the scene roughly 600 yards south of Alcatraz. The boat rapidly sank after the explosion, forcing passengers into the water. Rescue boats and helicopters were seen circling the area as crews pulled survivors from the bay. A triage area was set up at Gashouse Cove Marina.
This is a developing story. Search and rescue efforts are still active for the two missing people. Some reports also mentioned a dog on board that did not survive.
