Stock Market Today: Indian equities opened on a firm note on Monday, with benchmark indices trading higher in early deals. The BSE Sensex rose 325.96 points, or 0.39 per cent, to 83,140.67 at 9:17 am on 23 February 2026, supported by gains in frontline stocks. The Nifty Fifty also advanced 99.40 points, or 0.39 per cent, to 25,670.65, as sentiment improved after a US court put a temporary hold on tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Markets are preparing for sharp swings this week following a string of significant weekend developments, including a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States against tariff actions taken by US President Donald Trump and the announcement of a fresh 15 per cent global levy by the US administration.

On Friday, the apex court said Trump had exceeded his powers by introducing broad-based tariffs under an economic emergency provision. Shortly after the verdict, Trump unveiled a new 10 per cent across-the-board tariff through an alternative legal mechanism, which was later increased to 15 per cent.

Wall Street closed higher at the end of the week, with heavyweight technology names such as Alphabet Inc. and Amazon driving gains after the court invalidated the earlier tariff measures.

Oil prices declined about 1 per cent on Monday as Washington and Tehran moved toward a third round of nuclear talks, easing near-term geopolitical tensions. However, Trump’s latest tariff hike rekindled worries over global economic growth and energy demand.

On the domestic front, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) offloaded shares worth Rs 934 crore on Thursday. Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided support, net buying equities worth Rs 2,637 crore.
