MERKLEY: “I don’t think that’s approval is going to happen. And what I think we’re going to see is the end of those 150 days. Trump will say, well, there’s nothing the law says I can’t renew another 150 days. Or if by then the courts have said, no, no, no. It was a one time deal because there was some some question about that. He’ll invoke some other emergency power. He has no intention of following the spirit or the letter of the Constitution. the Constitution gives taxation authority, which includes tariffs to Congress, and all terrorists in the past have been through congressional authorizations. In fact, the very first bill the Senate ever, ever considered when it first came in the very first time has spent three weeks doing a tariff bill. And so the Supreme Court has said, no, the Constitution is clear. This power belongs to Congress. You can’t do this. And Trump said, well, I’ll grab another power and the 150 days that is authorized under the 1974 trade act, when there is a case of disproportional balance of trade, which we do, which we certainly have. But but the Trump’s whole intent is keep evading the the basic checks and balances. This is part of that authoritarian framework that I’ve been ringing the alarm about, of putting the military into the streets, rigging the next election, grabbing powers, power the purse and power taxation that belong to Congress.”
