MERKLEY: “You know, we laid out such reasonable reforms, reforms that are so important, like the ice is operating as a secret police in America. And I don’t say that that lightly. What secret police do they show up without id in unmarked vans, without warrants. They knock down doors. They take people, they detain people, they disappear people. All of that is happening here in the United States right now. So the reforms we asked for were to end that, to end the roving patrols, to end the warrantless break ins, to establish id, the standards for normal police in a democratic republic. And the Republicans have absolutely rejected those reforms. So the negotiations have not made progress. And so we’re at a standstill. I would like to see the agencies that are in the Department of Homeland Security that are not ice and cbp be funded separately. That’s the coast guard, that’s the tsa, and that’s FEMA, the emergency management. I’d like to separate those hostages out and get them funded, but we’re saying we’re not going to give any more money for ice and cbp. In fact, we want to claw back money from ice and cbp because they were so well funded by what Trump called those big, beautiful bill. That was really a big, ugly betrayal because it was all about hurting families to help billionaires. And so that’s where it stands. We’re at a no progress.”
