The world fell silent when a 72-year-old grandmother slowly climbed the steps of a French courthouse and took her seat in the public gallery to witness her own suffering, the abuse she lived through without knowing about it. For three whole months, Gisele Pelicot sat through the screening of horrific footage that showed her being raped by dozens of men. The crimes planned by the one person she trusted most: her husband of nearly 50 years, Dominique Pelicot.

Gisele did not have to be there and she could have easily chosen anonymity. But she made a decision that stunned France and the world. She waived her legal right to anonymity and insisted on being present in the court, fully determined to reclaim her story and seek justice on her own terms. What emerged during the trial was almost unimaginable.

Over a period of nearly 10 years, Gisele was repeatedly drugged into unconsciousness by her husband and raped by unknown men inside her own home. Dominique had contacted these men through sex-chat websites, inviting them over while his wife lay sedated in their bedroom. He recorded the assaults and stored the videos and images in a folder labelled 'Abuse.'

Many of the accused men later claimed they believed they were participating in a consensual sexual arrangement. Gisele was never complicit. She had no knowledge of what was happening to her body. She learned about the rapes only when police informed her long after the crimes had taken place.

The marriage, from the outside, appeared ordinary. Gisele and Dominique had spent five decades together, navigating financial hardships, health challenges and building a life surrounded by children and grandchildren. There was nothing in her daily life that prepared her for the truth: the man who had vowed to protect her was systematically violating her and enabling others to do the same.

Court documents revealed the chilling precision with which Dominique operated. Men were instructed to park their cars at a distance to avoid suspicion. They were told to wait sometimes for up to an hour until the sleeping drugs he had administered to Gisele took full effect. Once inside the house, they were asked to undress in the kitchen and warm their hands. Tobacco and perfume were strictly forbidden, so nothing would wake her.

It is likely that the crimes would have continued undiscovered if not for a chance intervention. A supermarket security guard caught Dominique secretly taking underskirt photographs of women. When police searched his devices, they found the extensive archive of recorded assaults. Only then did the full scale of the abuse come to light.

Until that moment, Gisele was unaware that she had been repeatedly raped or that she was carrying sexually transmitted infections because her husband showed no concern for her safety or health. In court, Gisele spoke with quiet strength. There was no dramatics. Addressing the judges and the public, she said, “This is for every woman who has been drugged without knowing it… so that no woman ever has to suffer like this again.”
