The South African cricket team created history as they silenced a crowd of over 90,00 people at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (February 23) to thrash hosts India by 76 runs in the first game of the Super 8 stage of the tournament for both teams. The Proteas have left the defending champions facing a major risk of missing the semi-final of the mega event, as even two victories in the remaining two matches might not be enough for the hosts, as their Net Run Rate (NRR) suffered massive damage.
Talking about the match, the Proteas posted a massive total of 185 despite losing three wickets in the powerplay with David Miller scoring 63 runs off just 35 balls while Dewald Brevis (45 of 29) and Tristan Stubbs (44 of 24) played important knocks. Jasprit Bumrah was the star of the show for India with a stunning spell of 3-15 in four overs.
In reply, India was bowled out for just 111 with Marco Jansen taking a four-wicket haul as no Indian player apart from Shivam Dube (42) making more than 20 runs.
South Africa broke Australia's 16-year-old world record and registered the biggest-ever victory over India by any team in the T20 World Cup. The Proteas are the first-ever team to beat the Men in Blue by over 50 runs in the mega event's history. This is only the third instance of India losing a game in the tournament by more than 20 runs.
