India vs South Africa,T20 World Cup 2026, Ahmedabad:In a match where every other Indian bowler was taken to the cleaners at the Narendra Modi Stadium, barring Arshdeep Singh, who had picked up a couple of wickets, Jasprit Bumrah stood out with his performance, returning with figures of3 for 15at an economy rate of 3.80 - as good a performance as you will ever see in a T20 match, let alone a World Cup game. Bumrah gave India the first breakthrough by removing Quinton de Kock early, and followed it up by getting rid of Ryan Rickelton inside the powerplay, giving India the start they would have dreamt of.

Arshdeep, at the other end, struck as well by removing the South African captain, Aiden Markram, reducing South Africa to 12 for 2, and then 20 for 3 with Bumrah sending Rickelton packing. South Africa, however, recovered brilliantly, courtesy ofDavid Millerand Dewald Brevis, as the duo stitched together a 97-run fourth-wicket stand that got the Proteas right back in the game.

While Bumrah gave away 15 in his four overs, the rest of the bowlers went for 172 in 16 overs - more than 10 runs per over. And if we take away Arshdeep's 2 for 28, India have given away 144 runs in 12 overs at 12 runs per over.

Bumrah's second spell saw him bring every other variation in his repertoire to play, which includes a slower ball, a slower ball bouncer, a yorker, mixing it up with the back of a length ball to which South Africa had no answer. But his fight with the ball went in vain as India never really arrived with the bat, losing wickets at regular intervals, and ultimately getting bowled out for 111, handing South Africa a massive 76-run win. A bowling performance of that stature in a T20 game hardly ever goes in a losing cause, unless another pillar of the game collapses so completely that even excellence cannot rescue it. And India had managed to do just that against the Proteas.

Bumrah's 17th over just went for five, where runs came only in singles, while his 19th over saw him dismiss Corbin Bosch in an over that only went for 3. He was by far the best bowler in the match, from both sides, and India would know that they had let their premier fast bowler down with an incredibly poor batting performance, chasing 188. The Men in Blue, now, find themselves in a spot of bother in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, and have to win both their games to entertain any hopes of qualifying for the semi-final.

India will play Zimbabwe on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, followed by their last Super 8 match against West Indies on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
