The Indian cricket team suffered a humiliating 76-run defeat against South Africa at the 2026 T20 World Cup during the first match of the Super 8 in Group 1 at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. The repeat of the last edition's final two unbeaten teams going head-to-head, with the Men in Blue losing their first game in the tournament after winning all four in the Group stage, with victories against the United States of America (USA), Namibia, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. The Proteas remain unbeaten after wins over Canada, Afghanistan, New Zealand, and UAE.
The result means that India is in danger of missing out on the semi-finals and has no margin for error anymore ahead of their clash against West Indies and Zimbabwe.
The defeat today marked India's first loss in an ICC event since the 2023 Cricket World Cup final to defeat to Australia. Ironically, that defeat had also come at the same venue as today's game (Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium). Before that loss, the Rohit Sharma-led team were unbeaten in the tournament and came into the summit clash with 10 wins in a row.
After that, India won both the 2024 T20 World Cup (8 wins in 8 matches) and the 2025 Champions Trophy (5 wins in five matches) under Rohit's captaincy before winning the first four games in the group stage of the ongoing tournament under Suryakumar Yadav.
Most Consecutive Wins In ICC Events
This also marked India's first defeat in the T20 World Cup since the semi-final loss to England in 2022 at the Adelaide Oval. In the span that lasted more than three years, India won more than 12 games in a row, which is also the most by any team in the competition's history. Australia and South Africa (8) are joint-second on the elite list.
The defeat to England in the 2022 edition was also the last defeat for India in any multi-nation event in the T20I format. Apart from the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Men in Blue also won the gold medal in the 2023 Asian Games and the 2025 Asia Cup title without losing any game.
