India suffered their first defeat in the 2026 T20 World Cup as South Africa thrashed the hosts by an emphatic margin of 76 runs at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, which has put major doubt over their chances of making the semi-final as they made the worst possible start to their Super 8 campaign. With two matches left, the Men in Blue have been left with no room for error, with their Net Run Rate (NRR) taking a major hit too.

After South Africa won the toss and chose to bat first, the hosts made a dream start as Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, and Ryan Rickleton were dismissed in the first five overs, leaving the Proteas reeling at 20-3. However, David Miller and Dewald Brevis' counter-attack effort put India on the backfoot and ensured South Africa put up a massive total of 185 on the board. In reply, India's top order crumbled and was reduced to 51-5

India are now left in a do-or-die situation with another defeat certainly set to knock them out of the competition. The Men in Blue will next play Zimbabwe on Thursday (February 26) at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai before facing West Indies at Kolkata's Eden Gardens on Sunday (February 27) in the last game of the tournament's second round.

India also needs to hope that South Africa defeats both Zimbabwe and the West Indies, or else it will complicate the situation for India. If the Proteas drop points against the winner of the match between Zimbabwe and West Indies, even two wins might not be enough for the defending champions, as three teams could end with four points. This scenario will leave the Suryakumar Yadav-led side in need of a victory by a massive margin in order to boost their NRR.
