US Secret Service agents shot and killed an armed man early Sunday after he entered the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s resort in Palm Beach, Florida, the agency said. Trump was at the White House at the time of the incident. First lady Melania Trump was also there Saturday night, reports AP.

The Secret Service said the man was “observed by the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago property carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can.” The incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

The man, in his early 20s and from North Carolina, had been reported missing by his family days earlier. Investigators believe he left North Carolina and drove south, picking up a shotgun along the way, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. A box for the gun was recovered from his vehicle.

According to Guglielmi, the man drove through the north gate of Mar-a-Lago as another vehicle was exiting. Secret Service agents confronted him, and he was fatally shot. A Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy also discharged a weapon during the encounter, the agency said.

Authorities have not released the man’s name. Investigators are working to develop a psychological profile, and a motive remains under investigation.

Trump has faced threats before. In July 2024, he was wounded during an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a bullet grazed his ear. The gunman was shot and killed by a Secret Service counter sniper after firing multiple rounds.

In September 2024, a man with a rifle was arrested near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach while Trump was playing a round. A Secret Service agent spotted the suspect, Ryan Routh, aiming a rifle through shrubbery before Trump came into view. Officials said Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon. Routh was later found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.

The latest incident comes amid a series of high-profile acts of political violence in recent years, including the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the killing of the Democratic leader in the Minnesota state House and her husband, the shooting of another lawmaker and his wife, and an arson attack at the official residence of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

The investigation into Sunday’s shooting remains ongoing.
