Nolan Wells’ final hours on Horn Island are under intense scrutiny after the 18-year-old college football player disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip and was later found dead in the water.

Nolan Xavier Wells traveled with friends to Horn Island, a remote barrier island located off the Mississippi Gulf Coast near Ocean Springs and Jackson County. According to authorities, Nolan was last seen on the island during the afternoon of July 4, 2026. His friends returned to the mainland without him, reportedly telling investigators that Nolan chose to remain on the island.
Nolan was reported missing later that night. After an extensive search involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Coast Guard, National Park Service personnel and other agencies, his body was discovered near the northwest end of Horn Island on July 6.
Nolan’s parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, say the explanation they have received does not add up. They question why their son would voluntarily separate from his group, why he did not contact his family and how his phone ended up leaving the island without him.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the Wells family, has raised additional questions about allegedly deleted phone data, conflicting witness accounts and video or audio that reportedly captures Nolan demanding that someone return his phone.
These claims remain under investigation and do not establish that a crime occurred. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has said investigators have not confirmed evidence of foul play, while continuing to interview witnesses, examine evidence and ask the public for original photos or videos recorded on Horn Island that day.
