An armed man in his early 20s was shot and killed by US Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office after unlawfully entering the secure perimeter at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate early Sunday, officials said.
According to a statement from the Secret Service, the incident occurred at around 1:30 am local time when the man was spotted near the north gate of the property carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can.
Agents and a sheriff’s deputy confronted the individual and shots were fired during the encounter. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured, and there were no Secret Service protectees at the location at the time.
Authorities said the man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin.
The FBI, the Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident, including the individual’s background, possible motive and the use of force. The agents involved have been placed on routine administrative leave, in line with agency policy.
