In a sudden announcement, US PresidentDonald Trumpdeclared that his government had dispatched a medical vessel to Greenland to assist with local healthcare needs, claiming that several people were "falling sick". Without discussing any details about the mysterious illness, Trump said that the mission is being coordinated in partnership with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to address medical challenges in the region. The announcement was accompanied by a visual representation of the USNS Mercy, a prominent naval hospital ship.

Taking to Truth Social to share the update, the President confirmed that the maritime initiative is currently in progress. He noted that the administration is "working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there. It's on the way!!!"

This humanitarian move follows the President's December appointment of Landry to act as a special envoy to the Arctic territory. Responding via the social media platform X, the Louisiana Governor expressed his gratitude, stating he is "proud to work" alongside the President regarding "this important issue." However, any details regarding the nature of the health crisis or the exact objectives of the mission remain elusive.

The deployment comes on the heels of a shift in diplomatic tone after Trump last month indicated he had "formed the framework of a future deal" concerning Greenland during discussions with the head of NATO.

For months, Trump had brazenly expressed his persistent interest in the semiautonomous Danish island, which had sparked friction within European diplomatic circles.

In January, he issued a blunt threat on Greenland, declaring that the US will "do something" to secure the Arctic island and warning that if a deal cannot be made "the easy way," Washington will take the "hard way" instead.

When asked about Greenland, Trump said, "We are going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not, because if we don't do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland -- and we're not going to have Russia or China as a neighbour. I would like to make a deal the easy way but if we don't do it the easy way, we're going to do it the hard way".
