Ryan Garcia put together perhaps the most dominant performance of his professional career, handily defeating Mario Barrios to capturethe WBC welterweight world titleon Saturday.
‘King Ryan’ nearly ended things in the opening round, planting Barrios on the canvas with a looping right hand near the ropes. To his credit, Barrios popped up and weathered the ensuing storm, though it quickly became clear that he had no answer for Garcia’s speed.
Through the entire 12-round affair, Garcia controlled the action as Barrios struggled to find any offense.
There was a window of opportunity for Barrios in the eighth round after Garcia appeared to injure his right hand, forcing him to slow down and rely on lefts for the final third of the fight.
Despite that, Garcia continued to control the action as Barrios still couldn’t break through the challenger’s guard.
In the end, Barrios would surrender his gold in one of the most lopsided decision losses in WBA history.
Official Result: Ryan Garcia def.Mario Barriosvia unanimous decision (119-108, 120-107, 118-109) to win the WBC welterweight world championship.
