In his July 4th weekend speeches at Mount Rushmore and in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump framed communism as the “greatest threat” to the United States, declaring it more dangerous than World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, 9/11, and even AIDS. He tied this rhetoric to recent Democratic primary victories by candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), claiming a “resurgence of the communist menace” and vowing that “America will never be a communist country.”
Guest host Keaton Weiss is joined by Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger as the duo mock Trump’s warnings as fear-mongering, noting that the DSA is not a communist organization and that policies like Medicare for All do not constitute communism because they preserve private ownership of healthcare providers and businesses. They argue Trump’s anti-communist messaging is a midterm election strategy aimed at rallying his base, similar to past scare tactics like the “immigrant caravan,” while also linking it to his anti-immigrant stance and push for the “Save America Act” voter ID law.
