US PresidentDonald Trumpannounced this week that he will order federal agencies to begin the process of identifying and releasing government files linked toextraterrestrial life. In a post on Truth Social, the president stated that the directive would be issued to the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, and other relevant departments, just days after former President Barack Obama's remarks about extraterrestrial life during a podcast interview.
In an interview with journalist Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama said that while he has never personally seen aliens, he believes they are real. He also said they are "not kept" at Area 51 and that there is "no underground facility" hiding extraterrestrial beings, dismissing long-standing conspiracy theories. Area 51, a classified Air Force facility in Nevada long associated with UFO speculation, was acknowledged by the CIA in 2013 as a testing site for spy planes.
“Unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States,” Obama added.
In an Instagram post, Obama further explained his belief that aliens exist by saying the statistical odds of life beyond Earth were high because the universe is so vast. But added that the chances of extraterrestrial life visiting Earth were low given the distance.
"I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!" he remarked.
Obama's remarks riled up Trump, who accused the former US president of "giving out classified information", though he offered no evidence to support the claim. He also claimed that whether aliens are “real or not,” Obama crossed a line.
“He gave classified information,” Trump said. “He’s not supposed to be doing that. I don’t know if they’re real or not… I can tell you he gave classified information. He made a big mistake,” he added.
The Pentagon has previously examined reports of unidentified aerial phenomena. Senior military officials stated in 2022 that investigations had uncovered no evidence suggesting alien visitation. A 2024 Pentagon report similarly concluded that most sightings were attributable to misidentified objects or ordinary phenomena.
