An Arizona couple say they discovered a pair of black gloves stained with what appeared to be blood in desert terrain about a mile from the home of missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, according to local media reports. The couple, who asked to remain anonymous, told KVOA-TV they found the gloves on February 11 off Campbell Avenue in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson — roughly 10 days after Nancy Guthrie was reported missing.
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, disappeared on February 1. Authorities have described the case as a suspected kidnapping.
The couple said the gloves were lying about 10 feet apart. "Sure enough, it was a black glove in the desert," they told KVOA. "It appeared to have looked like it was ripped. It also appeared to look like it had blood on it. There was two different colors. The blood was more towards the wrist side of the glove and on the pointer finger, it looked like it was ripped."
They said they did not touch the items, fearing contamination of possible evidence, but photographed the scene.
The wife told the outlet: "It didn’t just look like a regular glove. It looked like this was a glove used for something that could’ve possibly been what they were looking for." The husband added that a rock beneath one of the gloves appeared to have a dried droplet of blood.
"And also from the glove it looked like a blood drop on a rock underneath the glove was like dried blood or something. We didn’t move it or touch it. We immediately were like, we have to do something. So I was like I will call the sheriff department," he said.
Investigators attended the area, questioned the couple and later allowed them to leave. According to KVOA, officials remained at the scene until around 2 am.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department said it could not confirm whether the gloves found by the couple were among those collected for forensic testing. "We cannot confirm at this time. Detectives and agents have collected multiple gloves from the area, and analysis is part of the investigation," the department said in a statement to the outlet.
Authorities have previously confirmed that DNA recovered from other gloves did not match any profiles in the FBI database. They also said DNA found on at least one glove differed from DNA collected inside Guthrie’s home.
The FBI has been involved in the investigation. Footage released earlier showed an armed, masked individual outside Guthrie’s home on the morning she vanished. Officials have said at least one black glove recovered in the area appeared similar to those worn by the unidentified individual.
